Densifier: Lithium vs Sodium vs Potassium Silicate

What a densifier does

Densifiers are silicate solutions that react with free calcium compounds in concrete to form hard crystals within the pores. The slab becomes denser and more abrasion resistant, and a better polish becomes possible.

Sodium and potassium silicate

Older and widely used, they work well but can leave a white residue if over-applied or not cleaned properly. They suit many slabs when applied carefully.

Lithium silicate

Smaller molecules that penetrate readily and are less prone to leaving residue, popular in modern polishing. Different brands behave differently, so product knowledge matters.

Densifier and sealer are not the same

A densifier hardens from within. A sealer or guard sits at or near the surface. Most polished floors use both: densify during the process and guard at the end.

How a densifier works

A densifier is a water-thin silicate solution that soaks into concrete and reacts with free lime to form a hard, glass-like compound within the pores. The surface becomes denser, more abrasion resistant and less dusty.

Choosing a type

Sodium and potassium products have long been used on large floors. Lithium products are often chosen for their low dusting during application and good performance on tight, newly cured or hard-troweled slabs. The right choice depends on the slab, the schedule and the finish.

Application matters

Too much product can leave a white residue, and too little leaves soft spots. Good crews apply it evenly, keep the surface wet for the right time and remove any excess before it dries.

Where a guard fits in

A densifier hardens the slab, while a stain guard protects it from spills and gives the finish a final burnish. Most polished floors use both.

Quick answers

Is lithium always best?

It is a strong choice, but the right product depends on the slab.

Can I densify an already-polished floor?

Sometimes, depending on porosity.

Does densifier change the color of the concrete?

Not noticeably in most cases. It slightly darkens the surface when wet and then dries to a natural look.
