The short answer
Polished concrete is a concrete slab that has been mechanically ground and honed with finer and finer diamond abrasives, chemically hardened with a densifier and burnished until it reflects light. The shine comes from the concrete itself, not from something painted on top.
How it differs from a coating
A coating such as epoxy is a film bonded to the slab. It can chip, peel or yellow. A polished floor has no film to lift, because the surface is the slab, tightened from the inside. That is why polished floors are often described as part of the building rather than something laid over it.
What it looks like
Polished concrete ranges from a soft satin to a mirror gloss and can be natural gray or colored with dye or stain. It can expose fine sand, small stones or larger aggregate depending on how deep it is ground. Control joints and hairline cracks remain visible as lines, which many people find part of the charm.
Where it works
Warehouses, stores, offices, restaurants, schools, homes, garages and showrooms. It works anywhere there is a sound slab and a reason to want a hard, cleanable, long-lasting floor.
Why the shine lasts
Because the gloss lives inside the top layer of the slab, there is no film to wear through. Foot traffic and wheels slowly dull the surface in the busiest lanes, but the floor underneath is still hard, dense concrete. A refresh polish brings the shine back without starting over.
Densifier is a large part of this. It reacts inside the pores and turns soft, chalky cement paste into a harder, tighter surface that can take a deeper polish.
What it is not
Polished concrete is not a paint, a stain or a clear coat, although color and a guard can be part of the finished floor. It is also not a way to hide a slab that is badly broken. A sound slab is the starting point, and the polishing process shows the real character of whatever is there, including joints, patches and hairline cracks.
A quick way to picture it
Think of sanding a piece of wood from rough to very fine. The finer you go, the smoother and shinier the wood becomes. Concrete polishing follows the same idea with industrial diamond abrasives, plus a chemical hardener that wood does not need.
Quick answers
Is polished concrete the same as sealed concrete?
No. Sealed concrete has a protective layer on top. Polished concrete is densified and ground to a shine through many steps.
Does polished concrete last?
With sensible care it lasts for many years and can be refreshed.
Can new and old concrete both be polished?
Yes, as long as the slab is sound. We test hardness and condition first, because that decides the tooling and the realistic finish.
